Welcome to Brown College, home to the nicest people at Rice!
My name is Santi Avila and I am the current Brown College president. I was born in Bogotá, Colombia, but I have lived in Houston for most of my life. I am a senior studying Biological Sciences and aspire to go to medical school after Rice. I’m a huge soccer fan (Barça!!) and love cycling even though Houston is completely flat!
The residential college experience plays a huge role in making Rice an incredible place to study, live, and grow. Within Brown, students harbor some of their closest friendships and develop connections with their peers, professors, alumni, and associates of the college. One’s college reaches far beyond a residence; it serves as a hub of innovation, leadership, creativity. It’s a home and a family. The key to making the residential college system and Rice such a formative experience is student initiative and leadership.
As college president, I work with the executive cabinet (EC) and A-team (college magisters, RAs, and college coordinator) to ensure the smooth-sailing of the college. Outside of Brown, I work very closely with the other college presidents and Rice administrators like Dean Hutch and Dean Taylor to tackle issues that affect the university as a whole. My duty is to represent the values and best interests of Brown in campus-wide meetings with them.
This year, the EC has established some clear goals for the Brown Community. First, we are working to increase community cohesion through various events such as Fridays in the Quad which bring the college together as we kick off each weekend. Second, we are working to increase accessibility to the college leadership for all students at Brown not just the most vocal. Our ears are open because we represent ALL Brownies! Lastly, we want to bolster the college’s external affairs which include relations with other colleges, our alumni, and our associates.
If you ever have any questions, ideas, or concerns about Brown or Rice, let me know! Odds are that I can at least point you in the right direction. Feel free to shoot me an email, message, or stop by Quad 244. I’m looking forward to another awesome year at Brown!
